Anyone Know How To Beam Furniture?

I am trying my best not to lose it. My movers picked up my possessions on Monday, January 14 which is 8 days ago. The contracted delivery date was today at 5 p.m. I called to confirm delivery for the FIFTH time this morning only to find out for the first time that the van has not left California yet. So I am sitting in my empty apartment trying to figure out just where I am going to sleep for the next eight days while some jerk drives my entire life across the country.

My mom just called the moving company to brow beat them but so far they can't offer any kind of compensation. Oh but they will be compensating! I'll be filing a claim for all of my expenses for the next eight days and they'll also have to deal with my mother every day until they get here, which is punishment enough, let me tell you. The worst part is that the claims company won't even speak to me until they receive my claim in writing via US Postal Mail. US Postal Mail!? What year is this!? If any of the people involved in this snafu were in front of me in person, they would get a serious kick in the shins from my Michael Kors boots! So the employees of Gold Star Van Lines and Anthem Claim Management had better steer clear of me in person until they show up with my bed, desk, kitchenware, and collection of shoes!

Meanwhile, my mom and I will take a field trip to Crate and Barrel on Broadway to figure out how to live in this empty apartment for a week. Breathe, Natali, breathe...

It's a sign from Chance.

Leave it all behind and start fresh.

Why not stay in a nice hotel suite, then submit the reciepts to the claim company? Don't buy anything you won't be keeping after your stuff arrives! It will be just one more headache you'll have to deal with.. and who needs that?

January 22, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRob

When they finally get there don't be surprised if they hold your stuff hostage for more money. It's not uncommon.

Try craigslist for some cheap furniture to hold you over. There's also some "cheap" furniture stores in Northern Manhattan. Look around in Washington Heights and/or Inwood. There's an IKEA in Long Island and right off Route 4 in NJ. You can get a ZipCar and take the George Washington Bridge. Hope this helps.

I think moving companies are some of the most crooked people next to car dealers in the US. Time for a futon or an inflatabed :( You'll be ok though :) things will all work out. Especially with Mom on your side ;-)

Hi Natali,
Just a quick question - is it wise to publicly disparage the company who currently hold possession of your 'life' - not that they don't deserve it: just that ,well, i would be taking delivery of my stuff, THEN pointing out their poor service :-)

Indoor camping -FUN!

Don't forget to contact the BBB if they refuse to compensate you. My parents almost lost the money they paid to a construction company for a new deck, when they were shut down for not get a permit to build. We contacted the BBB and they assisted us to get a complete refund of all monies paid.

I had a very similar problem when I moved from one house to another house with a stop in a hotel for 3 weeks as the original owners had not moved out for some reason. So the moving company stored my stuff in their warehouse (a service they provide) yet when my stuff showed up, it was so horribly damaged that it wasn't worth them unloading. There are still about 5 boxes that are gone and never to be seen from again - that was 3 yrs ago.

I feel for ya Natali! Good luck!

Maybe your friends a C/Net might have some Ideas, maybe they can help. robert.

January 22, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRobert

Stay in a hotel. Keep the receipts and make the moving company pay for the hotel.

That's the best advice you'll get. Take it.

January 22, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAdam Sweet

Lawyer up right now!

Your next contact with the moving company has to be from strength.
This is common practice by any number of moving companies.
They, the moving companies will put you in a spin cycle.
I say it again, LAWYER UP!
Let the professionals argue for you.

That just sucks. I would never trust the moving van company with things that are expensive or valuable. Ship those UPS ground to your address and have signature confirmation. Your package will be held at the closest UPS shipping center until you pick it up and sign for it. It comes with insurance as well.

You should probably get the aero mattress to sleep on at least. Its useful as you can use it for visitors, camping trips and other small trips.

From the look out her window, Natali's apartment is balling. I remember visiting someone in New York a few years ago and it was 2750 for a 2bedroom apartment in a mid level location.

Natali - I bet you don't get any kind of compensation from these jerks.

I had a similar experience 2 years ago from Texas to Los Angeles.
They were 20 days late and nearly all my stuff was broken / damaged. Several boxes went missing.

The whole moving industry is unregulated - I wish you luck in getting this resolved and please keep us posted on how you get on!

I recommend buying an air mattress, a sleeping bag and a couple pillows. The same thing happened to me when I moved down from Detroit. It took a couple weeks. It sucks ... sorry to hear it happened to you.

January 23, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRob (in Memphis)

I have to admit, I am incredibly jealous. There is more excitement out your window then there is in most of Ohio.
I will have to second the vote for an aero-bed. I've had one for a couple years now and actually slept on it for most of a summer. They are a lot more comfortable than you would think.
I hope everything else goes well for you in New York.

I think you should take this as a good sign! My mom always says, "Pruning Preceeds the Harvest" - it means the worst things go down just before the best.

Good things are coming your way, Ms. Natali. I know it! :)

January 23, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterpatricia

Nothing like getting an earful from an angry mother, much less an angry woman. The moving company will get whats coming to them. On the flip side, perhaps it was a small sign that you shouldnt have left SF. But this move was whats best for you and your career, so good luck with everything out in NYC. Hope you get your furniture soon.

Am I the really the first one to comment here that you've got an awesome view?

January 23, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLuke

I recommend going to IKEA for some disposable, one-use furniture.

I agree with two of the other commenters:
1) this is a sign that it's time to start new and fresh (that harvest is coming) and
2) you DO have a great view!!! Nice place. Be sure to leave us some pics AFTER your stuff arrives and you are all settled in!!

January 23, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarc Wallis

Hang in there Nat. This will pass as all things do.

The new space looks wonderful! Enjoy every second of it with or without the furniture.

January 23, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSimon

im also pissed that you dont have your stuff yet!!! i do not want to sleep on an air matress but i will!! i bet you 100 bucks that if you were in front of the company you would not but your MK boots up there ass..
