Unpacking Party!
Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 05:31PM
My movers promised to deliver to my house at 7 a.m. today so I got up early and waited. And waited. And waited. Two hours later I heard back from them and they gave me some song and dance about why they were late. Long story short, they finally arrived at 2:15 p.m. Most of my furniture is damaged (as most of you warned me about) but I could hardly care at this point. I'll add it to the claim. Meanwhile, I am just so happy to see my clothes, shoes, scarves, hats, purses, Cutco knives, and red KitchenAid stand mixer! Tonight I am a normal person who can pour herself a glass of wine into a real wine glass! Hallelujah!
One of my biggest regrets in all of this is that my mom went home yesterday morning. I was hoping that my things would be delivered while she was here because my mom really knows how to make everything look nice and organized. She is a bit anal when it comes to that actually but anal helps when you are getting settled. To be clear, I don't only miss my mama for the slave labor factor. I miss her for a lot of reasons. She cried when she left me yesterday. She gave me a big teary-eyed hug when she got on the elevator and said, "I just want my baby home!"
Well I'm not a baby but I will be coming home soon. But not yet. For now I have to be a big girl and organize my own house.
Thanks for reading about the trials and tribulations of my move. I will try to make this the last rant.

Don't you dare make it your last rant. We love hearing from you about "normal" stuff.
Great,I'm glad your stuff came,It's a shame your boxes came damaged.Well at least you will be busy this weekend getting your house in order. :) P.S. Big storm headed your way,Have fun. Robert
So glad to hear you finally got your stuff! Now it will start to feel more like home.
And please keep blogging - we love to read about the regular gal Natali and all the behind-the-scenes stuff of your new job.
Is it hard being in NY all alone? Do you know people there? I have always wanted to move to CA but I'm afraid I will be lonely if I do it alone. Do you know people in NY? Do you have any tips on moving to a city without knowing anyone there? Sorry for all the questions, I'm living vicariously through your adventure :)
Keep up the rants, this is NY, live it up!
In fact, you better hurry to get your place ready for your big SuperBowl party Sunday. What, no one told you about it. We're all coming, maybe it was suppose to be a surprise.
Welcome to NY, enjoy it will be a lasting experience.
Bob
I'm so glad you finally got your delivery - good luck getting the place setup. I hope the rest of your experiences in there are much happier!
Yea!!!.. I am very happy for you Natali, its time to live it up. I too have been enjoying traveling along with you throughout this ordeal, but glad it is over. Sucks that stuff is damaged though. I say in a few months, you setup a meetup somewhere in New York, and all of us loyal followers can come up and welcome you in style!! I will even make the 4 hour drive from the D.C. area!
Bundle up, its getting colder.. See ya on Facebook!!

Great News!! I'm glad you finally got your stuff. It's been a long ordeal, and we're all relieved that it's finally over for you. Have fun unpacking this weekend. I'll be with you in spirit, kinda, I'm actually packing up this weekend for my own move. Take care.
Glad to hear that your stuff finally arrived. Sad that it showed up damaged . Being "normal" again must be a huge relief after all the turmoil you have been through with this move. It is always a good feeling to start making a place feel like your own after you move in. Good luck Natali and keep up the great work.
I was your mover and I most definitely refute the fact I promised you to be there at 7 I said I 8. I encountered a lot of problems with my trucks the last few days and I apologized for that. I continuously tried my hardest to keep in contact with you, which you seemed happy with. I sincerely am sorry it took as long as it did, yet my company was only a carrier, I did my best. And I arrived at 1:30 not 2:15 and your furniture was in relative decent condition except for the presswood and fragile particle wood (bookshelf, desk, etc) Natali your gorgeous and probably the highlight of my week, yet still moving companies do the best they can, you have to keep in mind they drive across the whole country, 53 1/2 hours from SF to NY!!!!Welcome to New York I pray you enjoy your time here. And once again I aplogize on behalf of Goldstar next time do your research...Lightning Van Lines...Either way you were very nice and to me understanding of the situation which I appreciate..Good Luck..
Rant away! You have earned it. What a drag.
Similar thing happened to me when I moved from NorCal to SoCal. Movers poked a nice hole in the couch, every piece of wood furniture had some nice, fresh scratches, and it was late.
(Interesting thing on the couch... couches are often made with extra upholstery, allowing an upholsterer to "release the hem" so to speak, and re-lay the material so that the hole "disappeared" from sight.)
This should bring Chapter 1 to a close, and we can turn the page to Chapter 2.
I'm glad you got your stuff, please do keep up the "normal" blog, best of luck with the unpacking.
Well, on the bright side, better late than never.
RR
Hooray! Furnishings and dinnerware!
Does this mean no more cookies and wine-from-the-bottle parties?
Have fun unpacking and settling in.

For the record, I was not mad at Jayson and I don't think he personally broke my stuff. But he did say 7 and then he said noon. Nevertheless, he was gracious when he got there and I appreciated that. Still, I do have a broken book shelf, armoire, bathroom shelf, and several glasses are broken. I'll be sending photos along with the claim. It isn't the end of the world and to be honest, my studio apartment can't fit most of that stuff anyway. But it is still another thing for me to deal with.
Also, this absolutely does not mean there will be no more cookies and wine-from-the-bottle parties! I foresee more of that in my future but more often than not, I'll use a glass.
:)
After this much waiting, even getting broken furniture is better than no furniture!
I kinda enjoy the unpacking into an empty place. You get to make those decisions where everything gets to go and (at least in my case) my house never looks as clean as when you just finish putting everything away.
haha! Cutco knives! I used to sell those in high school. Good thing my friends' moms were nice enough to buy the potato peeler (the cheapest item) from me.
